Using free wireless at library described as theft

It’s the weekend and this is funny to me. I found it by taking the long way from HotAir, reading the comments of several people whining (unfortunately Bryan was one of them) over Ann using the term faggot at CPAC. I guess it was just a really really really bad slur to use while telling a joke about pretty boy John Edwards. Who knew? Anyway, from HotAir I found the link to this blog which had posted this article.

I’m of the persuasion that an unsecured wireless internet signal is for anyone to use, but I’ve been called incredibly simple and backward before too. Here is what I found funny regarding the article:

…Tanner, 21, was using the library’s wireless Internet connection. He was told that his activity constituted theft of services and was told to leave. The next day, Sunday, police spotted him there again….

…Either way, Tanner’s Internet usage has been curtailed. He’s got a home computer, but his parents don’t let him on the Web after 9 p.m. He’s been using computers at the library during the day….

Granted, the kid needs to get a job. I just think it’s cute that he’s 21 and cannot get on the web after 9:00 PM . I doubt that he gets paid for being the moderator on that online gaming site.

Oh, did I mention that Howard Dean is demanding that the GOP candidates apologize for what Ann said? I’d love to say that anyone of them that does apologize will not be getting my vote, but then I remember how spineless Republicans can be, so, I wouldn’t want to be held to that.

  1. Hi w,

I think Dean should apologize. I don’t care for what; I just want him to apologize. He should also have to buy Ann donuts three times a week. She’s too skinny.

    the Grit

  2. To their credit, lately, the Senate Republicans seem to have rediscovered their spines (at least on standing up to the Dems on non-binding anti-war troop resolutions) and the Dems (in the House and Senate) seem to have lost theirs (in backing down cowering away from anti-war troop measures).

Indeed the kid should get a job. When I was at home with my parents, it was usually just the opposite in that I couldn’t get online (at least for extensive periods) before 9 PM.

  3. Hi Tammi,

LOL Grit, me too. That guy must hold a record of some kind for bitter, nasty, spiteful speech in search of fans and donors. And that’s saying something.

I would never use a wireless internet connection because we pay all our bills online and I wouldn’t be able to sleep thinking some geeky hacker was possibly interfering.

I’m an Anne Coulter fan, I’ve read all her books, read her column weekly and set aside time to watch any TV appearance she happens to make. Can she overstate her case from time to time? Yes. Shove it, Howard.

I get a window when booting up that says a wireless connection is availabe, most certainly a neighbor, and asks for a password for connection. Would I be stealing if I used it? My guess would be yes, but Cops? dang.

Keep crankin ‘em out T. Mucho!

    Hank

  4. Hi Hank –

Many times a window will say wireless connection available, but if the network is secured, you cannot get on it without the password. Now if you hack into it, yes, I think that’s stealing, but if it’s not secured, I say what the heck :) Not that I’ve done it mind you, I’m just saying if I needed to I would. I have no need, but then again, I’m not a moderator of an online gaming site. Therefore, I can go without getting online for several hours, maybe even days, if need be.

Currently, it is time to start our rib eyes sizzling for supper :) Thanks for dropping in guys.

  5. Just today I blogged about the Ann brouhaha, and while I think what she said was terribly rude and insulting (to gays, not to Edwards), I fail to see why the Republican party should be connected to it at all, or expected to demand atonement from Coulter. Unless I missed something, Ann is not an elected official or in the employ of the Republican Party–she’s a freelance pundit and writer. As far as all the lib whiners whipping themselves into a self-righteous frenzy, I’m still waiting for them to apologize for calling Bush, Cheney, et al. Hitler, Nazi, and fascist, which is far worse than the slangy misuse of the word “faggot.”

  6. Wytammic, are you implying that it’s ok for Ann to call Edwards a faggot in jest? I love Ann, but that was akin to calling a black guy the N-word, or a woman the C-word in jest. there’s just no way you can make that funny.

As ardent supporters of her, it’s important to let her know when we think she’s gone too far. Everything I’ve read/heard from her is insightful or funny. Except the ‘faggot’ and ‘raghead’ references. It makes her look bad, and it makes us look bad for supporting her.

    imo

  7. Hi Kevin,

I’m attempting to imply that as lewdandlascivious states, Ann is a free agent and can say what she wants. I’m not responsible for what she says, nor is the Republican party, candidates, etc …

Not trying to get her off on a technicality, but she never actually called Edwards a faggot. I will still buy a book she writes, and read her column religiously, and feel no obligation to defend what she says or doesn’t say. She’s responsible for herself. Just as side note, I do not think faggot is the same as using the “n” word or “c” word.

Sweetness & Light posted on the incident, and I’m inclined to agree with him.

  8. True, but if you comment on her statement, you either endorse or condemn what she said. If you endorse what she said, it’s the same as if you had said it yourself.

The only thing that really bugs me is that she just handed another shell to the enemy for the next time I defend her position while debating with a liberal. That’s disappointing.

Nevertheless, your position on the situation seems to be becoming the dominant one, at least on the right leaning blogs. I must be missing something.

  9. Hi Tammi

If you belong to one group you can say anything you want, enter Bill Maher. You belong to another and you are chastised and the target of destruction, example Ann Coulter. Freedom of speech is certainly a funny thing.

Not that I ever get the chance or condone theft, but I must ask why shouldn’t anyone be able to use wireless from the library? It’s not like it’s from a private business or individual. It’s paid for with taxpayer money, so if you think about it how can it be stealing?

21 and still at home… mom, cut the cord, kid it’s time to begin your life, get a job and an apartment. You’re an adult, start acting like one.

Oh no, I’ve become my father.

    Lord Crimson

  10. I wish I would have separated these stories. It’s looking as though they each deserve there own thread. Oh well.

LC — I’m not really trying to condone theft — just want to make the point that if people don’t want others piggy backing off of their wireless network, then they should secure it. It’s pretty simple to do and if they can’t figure it, there’s always someone at a help desk in India willing to help :) Our library offers wireless internet for people with laptops. I guess they just didn’t want him using the signal from his car? Sounds like libraries may like spying on people more than they normally admit? Good thing the kid wasn’t a terrorist :)

I don’t have too much of a problem with a 21 year old living at home if they are working and contributing. I wish my 19 year old was still home, but she flew the coop to college :( (Really, we’re happy for her — just miss having the kiddo around)

As for the Ann circus — it’s getting old, and I’m sticking to my guns. She said what she said, and she’s the only one that needs to defend it if she chooses to. Which, turns out she chose to. Tieki Rae has the link to HotAir.
