UPDATE: at the new Sunflower Desert
UPDATE: From CNN:
This is not the first time the highest-paid player in the NFL has been presented in a negative light.
He has been accused of transmitting genital herpes to a woman and using the alias Ron Mexico so he could get treated secretly for the ailment. He earned the ire of his hometown fans after flipping them the bird after a Falcons loss.
He was criticized for missing a chance to speak on Capitol Hill about after-school programs. And earlier this year, authorities investigated Vick after confiscating a water bottle with a secret compartment containing a substance that Miami airport authorities said looked and smelled like marijuana.
A National Football League spokesman said the latest allegations against Vick would be reviewed under the NFL’s personal conduct policy.
Seriously, if the Falcons keep this jerk, well then, they deserve to lose over and over again.
Michael Vic. If he’s guilty, what a loser. I’ve got no patience for this kind of idiocy. They’ve apparently been gathering evidence for quite a while. This post is from May 2007.
You’d think maybe the NFL might have had a talk with him when rumors were flying. But I think they were too busy with churches in Indianapolis. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of the NFL but apparently they have no control over gangster type activity, therefore, it’s much easier to lay down the law with churches wanting to have SuperBowl Parties than it is to control the numerous thugs within their organization. Ever hear the saying money don’t buy class?
(CNN) — Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick faces criminal charges and a possible prison sentence for allegedly participating in an enterprise that trained pit bulls for death matches in which spectators bet on the outcome, federal prosecutors announced Tuesday.
Vick, 27, and three associates were indicted by a federal grand jury in Richmond, Virginia, on a conspiracy count alleging they bought and sponsored dogs in an animal fighting venture and traveled across state lines to participate in illegal activity, including gambling.
According to the indictment, dogs that didn’t show enough fighting spirit, or that lost matches, were put to death by a variety of methods, including shooting, drowning, hanging and electrocution. Prosecutors allege that on one occasion earlier this year, Vick participated in killing eight dogs.
A National Football League spokesman said the allegations against Vick would be reviewed under the NFL’s personal conduct policy.
“We are disappointed that Michael Vick has put himself in a position where a federal grand jury has returned an indictment against him,” said spokesman Brian McCarthy. “We will continue to closely monitor developments in this case and to cooperate with law enforcement authorities.”
If convicted of both portions of the conspiracy charge, Vick could face six years in prison and a $350,000 fine, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.
No arrest warrants have been issued, and Vick and the other defendants — Purnell Peace, 35, of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Quanis Phillips, 28, of Atlanta, Georgia; and Tony Taylor, 34, of Hampton, Virginia – have not been taken into custody, said Jim Rybicki, a spokesman for U.S. Attorney Chuck Rosenberg.
A judge is expected to inform Vick and the others of the charges against them Wednesday and make arrangements for them to turn themselves in, Rybicki said.
Vick, a standout at Virginia Tech who was the first player chosen in the 2001 NFL draft, is one of pro football’s highest-profile and highest paid players. In 2004, he signed a 10-year, $130 million contract with the Falcons.
Makes me think the $350,000 fine won’t hurt too much.
The dogfighting investigation began in April, when authorities found 54 pit bulls on property Vick owns in Smithfield, Virginia, about 30 miles west of the Norfolk area where he grew up.
There was no immediate comment from Vick on the indictment. He had previously said that while he had a kennel operation on the property, he had no involvement in, or knowledge of, a dogfighting ring.
But the indictment issued Tuesday charges Vick was intimately involved in the operation, known as “Bad Newz Kennels,” and that he bought the Smithfield property for $34,000 for the purpose of going into business with Peace, Phillips and Taylor.
Between 2001 and April 2007, Vick and his associates bought and trained pit bulls and hosted dogfights at the property, and dogs were also taken to locations in at least six other states to participate in fights, prosecutors said.
The owners of the winning dogs collected purses that ran into the thousands of dollars, and spectators also placed side bets on the outcome, prosecutors said. After one of the “Bad Newz” dogs lost a fight in March 2003, Vick personally paid $23,000 to the winning dog’s owner, who is now a cooperating witness for the prosecution, the indictment said.
According to the indictment, an unidentified associate from Bad Newz Kennels admonished another participant at a dogfight who yelled out Vick’s name during an event in the fall of 2003 — a participant who is also now cooperating with prosecutors.
The indictment also alleges that Vick and his associates “rolled” some of their dogs — testing them in short fights to determine how well they might fight. Dogs that failed the test were killed, prosecutors said.
While most of the dog killings noted in the indictment were allegedly carried out by the other defendants, Vick himself participated in the killings of eight dogs in April, according to the indictment. The animals were killed “by various methods, including hanging, drowning and slamming at least one dog’s body to the ground,” the indictment said.
Remember this lack of class shown by Vic? He was sorry though:
First and foremost, I would like to apologize for my inappropriate actions with fans today. I was frustrated and upset at how the game was going for my team, and that frustration came out the wrong way. That’s not what I’m about. That’s not what the Atlanta Falcons are about. I simply lost my cool in the heat of the moment. I apologize and look forward to putting this incident behind me.
Six years in prison? That seems ridiculous to me. Thugs that commit these kinds of atrocities need not ever see the light of day as far as I’m concerned. I’ll be shocked if Vic ever sees the inside of a prison over this. And, if he does, the likes of Jackson and Sharpton will certainly be crying racism.

This guy is a real fool. He has money, success, and fame and yet he dabbles in ridiculous and abhorrent things like dog fighting. If he got kicked off the team it would be the best thing that happened for them. He has been holding back his team for a long time.
Hi TT. I completely agree. If I lived in Atlanta I would be calling for his dismissal. No team needs such a fool in a leadership position. He’s just disgusting.

Those poor puppies. Now I’m ready to cry (in all seriousness).
How absolutely horrible. Never understood why people attack the most defenseless in the world. Gross.
Hi Bridget. People can be so freaking mean and disgusting. I hate looking at that picture I have posted, but people need to see what the real animals are doing. Like I say, six years in prison? Child’s play for such hideous behavior.

Hi w,
I’m so glad you covered this bit of news. I was going to write about it this morning, but I was so angry that I couldn’t type because my hands were shaking. I had to go outside and kick things to calm down.
My wife, a veterinarian, does a lot of animal rescue work. We have a big problem in the Memphis area with street gangs raising pit bulls for fighting. Unfortunately, when they decide a particular dog isn’t worthy, they just turn it loose. Thus, we have an actual physical danger in parts of the area from pit bull packs roaming the streets and attacking people.
On the other hand, all of our dogs have been rescued off the streets by various kind hearted people. We get the ones that no one else will adopt, mostly because they are too big or have bitten someone. Since we live in “the country” this isn’t as much of a problem for us as for most. At the moment, we have four and two of those are pit bulls. One of those, Betsy, is the sweatiest dog ever. Wildman, weighing in at 80 pounds, is a different story, but is still a mighty fine dog, and a valuable asset when it comes to discouraging people wondering across our property. Not that long ago, he actually bit through the front tire of someone who drove up wanting to sell me something. What a great dog!
Which brings me to venting about the people who torture these animals. In my opinion, the only appropriate punishment is to strap a raw steak to their throats and toss them in with their captives.
Thanks for the opportunity to get that out of my system.
the Grit
Hi Grit, I’d prefer that people didn’t do stupid hideous things such as raise dogs to fight, but since this moron appears to have done so, I want as many people as possible to know about it. I get ticked off just reading about it too. And, since this is my blog, I will say that I am of the opinion that how people treat animals can very much correlate with how they treat people. It’s a personal observation.
I’m glad that you are able to provide a rescue environment for some of these abused critters.

I just found your site and i must say that i enjoyed readin it.
BTW, are you a NY Yankee fan?
You must be one caz you sould like you are pretty darn smart.
Hi DD2. As a matter of fact, I’ve liked the Yankees since the early 80s when I was in KC and was able to see Reggie Jackson hit 2 home runs against the Royals. I wish that’s all it took to make me smart! Oh yeah, we even have a picture of our only daughter with Reggie Jackson. This was taken after he retired, but nevertheless, it’s pretty cool!

I don’t know if its the case in the US but I find that over this side of the pond professional sports people get away with lots because they are professional sports people. You have guys both in Association Football (Soccer) in the UK and Ireland and Gaelic Football (Particularly Gaelic Football) who are real thugs, have been involved in very questionable behaviour yet get away with it because they are stars. I have absolutely no time for anyone who could abuse a poor defenseless animal.
Hi Marcas,
Yes, I do believe we have stars who get away with more crap than they should. My hope is that Vic goes broke paying sleazy defense attorneys that most likely will get him off. I guess a better deal would be going broke paying sleazy defense attorneys and then still having to spend time in prison — oooo that would just be sweet. Granted, that doesn’t seem like much justice for the animals that have been abused, but it would be better than nothing.
Seriously, I’m a huge fan of the National Football League. I also believe that they have many star athletes who contribute to and benefits society greatly. Too bad that jerks like Vic even get headlines.
Thanks for stopping in — and isn’t it fun to agree on something? However I’m sure we also agree that we wish this kind of crap never took place.

Did you hear, Michael Vick released a statement. Here, I’ll repost it.
“To my legion of adoring fans. I am so sorry that I let you down. Not with the whole dog fighting thing, I mean regarding my abilities (or lack thereof) on the field. Between all my injuries caused by my failure to actually throw the ball (an odd thing since I am a quarterback), and my frequent confusion over whether I am the Atlanta Falcons quarterback or their running back, I haven’t played many complete seasons since I started with this team.
In addition, I know my stats have been pretty mediocre (except for yards on the ground, which are quite impressive FOR A QUARTERBACK). Also, I know that I frequently do incredibly stupid things like flipping off my fans and letting dog fights occur on my property. But can’t you forgive me? After all, it isn’t like I killed my wife.
Speaking of that, perhaps if I hung out with O.J. you guys might appreciate me more. Kind of like how when average looking girls have an ugly friend they look even better- but this would be more about morals than looks. I mean, seriously, do I have to hang out with O.J. and Pacman Jones in order to look like a half way decent and respectable quarterback? If that is what I must do, then I guess I must. As long as it doesn’t involve throwing the football, I hate doing that.
Well, I am off to the Golf Course to help O.J. find the real killers. Maybe I will get lucky and they will be responsible for all those dog fights too?!”
[The above was satire...as you could have guessed]
Too funny! Of course, when he has a crappy game he just flips the bird to the fans that help pay his $130,000,000 contract.

I have a Bully Breed dog who’s the biggest sweetheart ever. He also happens to be an escapee of the tortures of fighting. At 4 weeks old he and his sister were found roaming. I could only afford him or I’d have taken both.
I live in Florida and dog fighting is a disease around here. Even the nice neighborhoods, like the one my mom lives in, has people who fight dogs. Its sickening. The police won’t do anything unless a person is attacked and Animal Control is useless.
Have you seen this video yet? http://gprime.net/flash.php/thepitbullproblem
it really shows the full picture. I think Vic (and anyone else who fights animals for sport) should get what they give to those animals. The animals don’t attack people generally. As far as I can tell they usually only do it when there is more than one. I can’t imagine that sicing a pit bull on him would result in anything.
Imagine the nobility of the dog, who forced to endure such abuse from humans, still finds the heart to reach out to humans again. I could only hope to live up to that…
Cee // July 23, 2007 at 1:31 pm
Anyone who abuses animals whether in this cruel manner or any other way should have an enormous amount of fines levied against them, spend time in prison and, in this particular instance, lose everything that their fame and fortune has afforded them.
There is no excuse for animal abuse and this guy should lose everything.
Neall // July 24, 2007 at 12:00 am
I think the statistics for bites are more for labs since they are such a popular dog. Aggression is a learned behavior, so if that is associated with pit bulls, it may have been re enforced somewhere along the ancestry, so there is definitely a risk - so therefore fewer people want to risk having pit bulls as pets, resulting in the lower statistic for bites. Sad, though, that we as humans have created the situation for this breed. Probably because pit bulls (like boxers) are agile and athletic dogs and perhaps more entertaining to observe in a fight for those unfortunates who need this as a pastime. Those who organize such things should do time. Big time.

I was sadden to see the photo posted above, but yes, it should be displayed so the public can see what torture these poor dogs have been subjected to… so sad that humans, the higher and most intelligent could perform such cruelty on such innocence creatures. So disgusted , Nike and other companies associated with Vic, should pull out, no questions asked. He should be found guilty just by association with the fighters and the gamblers.
Tammy // July 31, 2007 at 12:21 pm
This is totally upsetting and I am of the belief that what he has done to these living breathing animals should be done in return to him and everyone else involved. Put them in a rink and let them beat each other to death, yet that would be to easy on them.
These god creations, probably very loving, gentle animals until these human animals got a hold to them. I believe, since we can’t let them, the so called human beings, so for each other throats, I say put them in jail, harden criminals jails, where they can be treated like the animals they are.
I have cried and cried over this and the more I think about it the more it pisses me off. Poor innocent animals, whether it be dog, cock fights, etc. These are innocent animals made to turn into violent ones.
Vic and everyone else involved in any such action deserve the hardest punishment they can receive.
I am glad all Vic’s sponsors are pulling out from underneath him and the so call “football” star needs to not be allowed to play anymore - any kind of sport.
As far as the NAACP, whether he was black or white - I would feel the same way - any one no matter what color or education that does this is low life scum!
Tammi // July 31, 2007 at 12:54 pm
Hi Tammy,
Yes, I think the crime is horrendous and that Vic should do hard time if convicted — though he won’t.
Anyway, I certainly understand your sympathies for the animals, however, I wish that I could get some of these passionate responses regarding murdering abortionists torturing and killing innocent babies every day. I love dogs, but why cannot people get outraged over abortion in the same manor? It truly puzzles me.
Thanks for stopping in.
Tammy // July 31, 2007 at 1:15 pm
I agree with you on abortion as well - a human breathing life, a breathing life of any kind is worth saving no matter what. God has a plan for each of us and who are these selfish people who take it upon themselves to end life, in any form, early.

This is SAD…
I owned a pit from a puppy and raised him with 4 babie boys (my children) he slept with them, ate with them and played. Bouncer was by far the best attentive family pet i’d ever owned…Then the SHEPARD across the street (very aggressive dog) with a doggie door and underground electrical fence (that went all the way to curb). Everytime I walked my puppy everyday or night this SHEPARD would come out and go nuts on my dog! I spent thousands of dollars on training and being a responsiable pet owner then @ 75 pounds and 1 year old this dog (shepard) attacked my pit while I was walking him on a leash….From that moment on I couldnt walk my dog anymore because that dog was always waitting and my dog never forgot because my husband threw himself on my pit when the shepaard attacked…My dogs eye was almost put out and he was bit badly…To this day that dog is still there and the authorities will do NOTHING! Unfortunately my kids family pet they loved and grew with is gone…I had to give him to a loving family in the country with a one year old because the shepard made him hate anything with four legs…Wheres the justice? Michael Vic will get whats coming to him if not thru the courts then carma will get him.
angry as hell with Michael Vic // August 4, 2007 at 8:11 pm
Hello my sister works for the NFL and alot of people are calling and complaining about these charges. I think that instead of calling the NFL they should contact the government and senetors about this madness. Animals have rights too and you have to be a real ass to abuse any animal. That’s what cowards do. Animals can’t defend themselves like people can. So I think that the matter should go higher up than the NFL.
Tammi // August 4, 2007 at 8:29 pm
Hi angry as he____,
I think the NFL is a good target for phone calls. I agree that abusing animals is stupid, but laws are already in place against what Vick is being accused of. Therefore, I’m really not in favor of contacting Congress regarding this issue. They are not the answer to everything, THANK GOD, because they’re pretty much worthless. Especially now that the DemonRats are in charge.
Thanks for your comment.
FilmJunkie // August 4, 2007 at 9:56 pm
As a faithful animal lover, I was hurt when I heard of this. I am not oblivious to the fact that there are in fact people out there who participate in this type of cruelty. But for someone who is clearly in the spotlight to put himself in this position is pure stupidity. Animals do not have the capability to stand up for themselves the way a human does. Which is why it is up to us as humans to take action on their behalf. Animals exist for many purposes. But one of those purposes shouldn’t be entertainment. We are living in a civilized world. It’s time to stop being barbaric and do what’s right. Michael Vick should be punished for his participation in his cruelty towards helpless animals. And for the love of animals, I hope he learns his lesson.

Hi,
I too am appalled and disgusted at the behaviour of an ingnorant, arrogant and cruel thing that is Michael Vic. He cares not for animals, not for people, not for laws and certainly not the laws and conventions of society.
This ‘thing’ may get off lightly here, due to the stupidity of “Sports Hero Worship” this happens to often, this station in life is so very shallow and yet reaps rewards… well here on earth anyway…..
Vic, you are a thug, your are the repository of all that I see as unworthy of breath and you will recieve your judgement, you will reap what you sow….. I fervently hope that this will happen here on earth, right now…… but I can assure you that when you meet your maker - which to conserve oxygen for more life worthy creatures like … worms for example…..is soon….. yes - when you reach the other side may you endure ongoing torments, like being pointedly ignored by everything other than parasitic bowel and stomche experging which I hope will give you eternal vigilance and attention….
For those who wonder what they can do, how they can help such cruelty cases from occuring…….?
Get involved, do good, help rescue organisations simply by supporting them…. rescue yourselves, lt other know that you support rescue, donate either your time &/or money… each would be welome….. vote…. right leters…. let your voice be heard for those who have no words that they can use… stand up adn make the world aware that cruelty IS something that can be reduced, that it IS an importnant political issue, that life without cruelty to animals is a better world for all…
Those who are cruel to animals will escalate to humans, and the widr world as they test just how far they can go with their pathetic ‘thrills’
If I had my hands on that small, mean, cruel heart of Vic, I would ensure that he would know that what he had done was wrong, and he would never do that sort of thing again, let alone support it……
Vic, I pray that you suffer for your sins and your crimes….. and I pray that this happens soon!

Ya know it took them putting the pitbull fighting on TV and internet for people to realize what a evil horrible hanis crime was being commited these dogs cant get online and protest for themself nor can they say hey i dont want to fight. There are so many people out there with blinders on and finally with all the publicity they are getting a fair trial. As for people fighting to have child molesters and murderers and rapist etc to have them convicted…there are plenty of people out there doing that and if it were a football star that raped a girl…well it would hit national headlines no doubt in my mind and it should….BUT its nothing new to the public but the pitbull fighting is finally being recoginized in the public eye and has raised a few hairs and opened eyes as to were child molesters, rapist and such have always been there and will always be in the publics eye that the book should be thrown at them…..i agree…but as a loyal pitbul owner of three…this is a new level for the dogs….finally they arent blaming the damn dog for it….its finally come back to bite the owner for a change!!!!!

I got to say some more. Vic is a punk. He had it all and should have been grateful and should have served as a positive role model for young people. Instead he stoops to violence on guiltless animals. this is a very insecure individual who needs to lord over other creatures in life and death decisions to feel himself more powerful.
He needs a daily dose . Daily lessons in who has the power over him. Daily reminders of how it feels to be on the other side of curelty. I really do not think any punishment that could be legally imposed for these dog fight disgusting crimes could ever be enough pay back for him.
What a low life scumbag. If they let him continue to play they will certainly lose a huge amount of their fan base.
Give this creep what he deserves. I hope he ends up homeless on the streets and every stray dog bites him on the ass each and every day;.

Miche Jones // August 15, 2007 at 12:54 pm
I dont think he should go to jail for dog fighting. Its an animal. There are pople in the world starving and homless and people are bitchin over some dead animals. I think he should be made to give a large portion to the people less fortunate, like the countless number of homeless children here in the UNITED STATES. He cant do any good with his money in JAIL.
Now I do believe he was not thinking and continued to hang around people that might not have his best interest in mind and I do believe he made some bad decisions but to end a career and pretty much a young life over this. Its not warranted. I think there are other ways to make him pay for his mistakes.

The NFL would never have done a thing if they knew and the authorities were not involved
With repsonsible news reporting and the wonderful kind of society that we are blessed to have born into these things come to light and lets hope that justice-Not one that makes an example BUT TRUE justince is served.
My heart aches for any unneccesarry suffering-People FIRST and then for any of God’s creatures-Especially a dog-man’s servant that is loyal and provided to help us-ANd then to treat them like pre garbage for recreation when he could be doing so much for so many good causes-I pray that he sees his wickedness and his need to turn his life around and begin to use his life to help other people instead of hurt inncoent creatures\\although hs now has a penalty to pay to society
I pray for you Mr. Vic and hope that you be the kind of man God intended-
God help and and your family and forgive you for the pain you inflicted on so many helpless creatures.

We all vent about Vick and his actions. I, too, have shed many tears, but once the judicial system decides his fate, do we all simply forget and move on with our busy lives? The atrocity of dog fighting continues to this day. Clearly, some human beings (hardly human) consider this a sport to be enjoyed. How do we change this mindset? Surely, we can make a difference for God’s creatures.

Anyone that looks at the pictures and imagines the horror that these animals have endured would KNOW what needs to be done to VIC or ANYONE that takes part in this type if “entertainment” and money making activity…. it tells the truth about that persons heart and intent in life…. Until these types of people are dealt with….it will continue, make an example out of him and all that were involved… it will continue to be in the media ..HOPEFULLY… so that the other jerks out there will get the picture! We need to enforce the laws! Besides haven’t we all know for years that killers and no goods start out by torturing animals … ! It is so sad that they pick on creatures that are so willing to please … I say … give him the MAXIUM !!!

I cry every time3 I hear or reade the manner in which he killed dogs. I am a dog friendly (off the chain) person. My husband - a minister-who has observed my passiomate love for dogs has advised me to put God first which I believe is sound advice.
I also realize that God made me and knows all about me and knows that my love for dogs is
sincere and does not displace nor indicate that dogs are priorotized above God.
Michael Vick should to be punished severely which will send a message to others engaging in this type activity. I was delighted to see that a company made Vic chew toys for dogs which may be our only consolation, for, the courts are sometimes lenient towards famous persons and they get a slap on the wrist. A wrist that should be amputated- without anesthesia.
Advise me as to where I can purchase these toys so my two chows and I can have a ball destroying them.
I live in Tampa, Florida and have not been able to locate them
I appreciate your sensivity of hiding the address, but it is not necessary for me. I’m OK with CNN knowing the contents of this correspondence.

Michael Vic is a poor excuse for a human being and should
be treated as the aminals were. He is nothing but a fake
and liar and what is done to him will be nothing compared
to what the animals suffered.

How could someone do something like that to a poor animal, I dont think those animals ever did anything to him.

We have bred and Shown Registered Quarter Horses, Poodles, Great Danes and now own a pair of Mini Australian Shepherds. There is never an excuse for abusing any animal much less fighting them. I believe anyone guilty of this heinous crime should be punished as in Biblical times. This would be for him to be locked in an arena and turn a hungery pack of Pitt Bull’s loose on him, I’d pay to see this fight.
Yours In Good Health
